Unicode 17.0 is the presumed release of the <a href="/the-unicode-consortium">Unicode Standard</a> for September 2025, with emojis added in this update expected to come to major platforms in late 2025 and throughout 2026.

There are currently eight draft candidates for new emoji codepoints for Unicode 17.0.

Unicode 16.0 is the version of the <a href="/the-unicode-consortium">Unicode Standard</a> released on 10 September 2024, with the emojis added in this update expected to come to major platforms in late 2024 and throughout 2025.&nbsp;

Unicode 16.0&nbsp;introduced a total of 5,185 new characters, of which 7 were new emoji code points. This brought the total number of characters encoded within Unicode to&nbsp;154,998.

All the emojis recommended within Unicode 16.0 were also included within <a href="/emoji-16.0">Emoji 16.0</a>, which also featured one additional emoji sequence.

Unicode 15.1 is the version of the Unicode Standard released on September 12, 2023.

This update featured no new emoji code points, though <a href="/emoji-15.1">Emoji 15.1</a> did introduce 118 new emoji sequences,

A total of&nbsp;627 characters were recommended in this update,&nbsp;bringing the total number of characters encoded within Unicode to 149,813.

Unicode 15.0 is the version of the Unicode Standard&nbsp;released on&nbsp;September 13, 2022. 20&nbsp;new emoji&nbsp;code points were added in this release,&nbsp;with all 31 new emojis (including 11 sequences)&nbsp;listed under <a href="/emoji-15.0/">Emoji 15.0</a>.

Unicode 15.0 introduced a total of 5,185 new characters, including the 20 new emoji codepoints listed below. This brought the total number of characters encoded within Unicode to&nbsp;149,186 characters.

Unicode 14.0 is the version of the Unicode Standard&nbsp;released on&nbsp;September 14, 2021.&nbsp;37 new emoji&nbsp;code points were added in this release,&nbsp;with all 112 new emojis (including sequences for skin tones)&nbsp;listed under <a href="/emoji-14.0/">Emoji 14.0</a>.

This release of this Unicode Standard was&nbsp;<a href="http://blog.unicode.org/2020/04/unicode-140-delayed-for-6-months.html">delayed from March 2021</a> due to COVID-19.&nbsp;

Unicode 14.0 introduced a total of 838&nbsp;new characters, including the 37 new emoji code points listed below. This brought the total number of characters encoded within Unicode to&nbsp;144,697.

Unicode 13.0 introduced a total of 5,930&nbsp;new characters, including the 55 new emoji code points listed below. This brought the total number of characters encoded within Unicode to&nbsp;143,859.

Unicode 10.0 is the version of the <a href="/the-unicode-consortium">Unicode Standard</a> released on June 20, 2017.&nbsp;8,518 new characters were included with this update, of which&nbsp;56 were emoji characters. This brought the total number of characters recommended by Unicode to 136,690 characters.

The Unicode Consortium accepted the following emoji 72 emojis&nbsp;for Unicode 9.0. This update&nbsp;was released&nbsp;on June 21, 2016. Most vendors added support for this update within the 2016 calendar year.&nbsp;<a href="http://blog.emojipedia.org/unicode-9-0-released-with-72-new-emojis/">Sample images and more about Unicode 9.0</a>.

<a href="/emoji-4.0/">Emoji 4.0</a> was published in late 2016, which added additional emoji professions.

<h2>New in Unicode 9</h2>

The Unicode Consortium has approved the following 41 emoji characters as part of <a href="http://www.unicode.org/versions/Unicode8.0.0/">Unicode 8.0</a>, released on June 17, 2015. This is comprised of 37 new emojis, plus five emoji modifiers. Find out <a href="http://blog.emojipedia.org/unicode-8-what-and-when">more about this update</a> on the Emojipedia Blog.

The Unicode Consortium approved the following characters as part of <a href="http://www.unicode.org/versions/Unicode7.0.0/">Unicode 7.0</a>, released on June 16, 2014.&nbsp;Support for these emoji characters rely on updates from platform vendors such as Apple, Google, and Microsoft.

Initially, 250&nbsp;new characters in Unicode 7.0 were approved for emoji presentation, however this was later reduced to 103 Standard Additions which are listed below. The other characters remain part of Unicode, but are not recommended&nbsp;to be included as emojis.

The exception to this was the <a href="/left-speech-bubble/" title="🗨 Left Speech Bubble">Left Speech Bubble</a>, and as such wasn&#39;t initially specified on other platforms as an emoji. A later-accepted&nbsp;<a href="http://blog.emojipedia.org/diverse-spy-proposal/">proposal</a>&nbsp;updated this.

A small update to the much larger Unicode 6.0. Unicode 6.1 included 13 new emoji characters.

Released in&nbsp;October&nbsp;2010, Unicode 6.0 was the first version of the <a href="/the-unicode-consortium">Unicode Standard</a> to support emoji.

Some characters in <a href="/unicode-5.2/">prior</a>&nbsp;versions of Unicode were retroactively updated to provide&nbsp;an emoji presentation. This release was the first to introduce new characters for the sole purpose of compatability with emojis being used in Japan.

Unicode 5.2&nbsp;pre-dated emoji inclusion in Unicode by one&nbsp;year, and included many characters primarily sourced from the&nbsp;<a href="http://www.unicode.org/L2/L2007/07391-n3341.pdf">ARIB set of Japanese broadcasting symbols</a>.

Yawning Face

A brown heart emoji.

As with the other color-based hearts, this emoji is often also used to express an affinity with or appreciation for various people, places, groups, objects, or ideas associated with the same color. For example, this emoji has been found to often be used to discuss topics related to <a href="/black-lives-matter">racial identity</a>.

As of &nbsp;<a href="https://blog.emojipedia.org/what-every-heart-emoji-really-means/">February 2021</a>, this emoji was the &nbsp;least used of the nine colored hearts that existed at that time (the others being&nbsp;<a href="/red-heart/">❤️</a>,&nbsp;<a href="/orange-heart/">🧡</a>,&nbsp;<a href="/yellow-heart/">💛</a>,&nbsp;<a href="/green-heart/">💚</a>,&nbsp;<a href="/blue-heart/">💙</a>,&nbsp;<a href="/purple-heart/">💜</a>,<a href="/black-heart/">🖤</a>, and&nbsp;<a href="/white-heart/">🤍</a>).

Brown Heart

A white heart emoji, used for love and affection. Also commonly <a href="https://blog.emojipedia.org/what-every-heart-emoji-really-means/">used to discuss&nbsp;someone passing away</a>.

As with the other color-based hearts, this emoji can also often used to express an affinity with or appreciation for various people, places, groups, objects, or ideas associated with the same color.

An alternative character known as <a href="/white-heart-suit/">White Heart Suit</a>&nbsp;is also available, but not intended to have an emoji appearance.

A person gesturing with their index finger between ear and mouth, used as a deaf sign&nbsp;in American Sign Language (ASL) and a number of other global sign languages.

May also be combined with the&nbsp;<a href="/shushing-face">🤫&nbsp;Shushing Face</a> emoji&nbsp;to reference &quot;<a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mewing_(orthotropics)">mewing</a>&quot;.

Deaf Person

A person standing upright. Commonly used to convey&nbsp;awkwardness,&nbsp;particularly <a href="/tiktok/">on TikTok</a>.

Similar in appearance to&nbsp;<a href="/person-walking/">🚶 Person Walking</a>, but shown facing forward&nbsp;and without any motion implied.

Standing Person

A person kneeling down on one or both knees. May be used to represent someone in prayer, or a&nbsp;person resting on the floor.

Kneeling Person

An orangutan, the orange-haired ape with long arms. Depicted facing forward, with a long broad face&nbsp;and sitting with its legs bent. Occasionally shown scratching its head. Color varies across platforms, ranging from orange&nbsp;to light brown.

This emoji is considered <a href="https://blog.emojipedia.org/how-the-monkey-emoji-is-racist/">racist in some contexts</a>,&nbsp;particularly when used to disparage, insult, and abuse people with dark skin, especially Black people.

Orangutan

A <a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Guide_dog">guide (or Seeing Eye) dog</a>, trained to help lead a person who is blind or visually impaired. Generally depicted as a yellowish-brown Labrador Retriever on all fours facing left, equipped with a harness and handle. Many platforms additionally include a collar.

Not to be confused with <a href="/service-dog/">🐕&zwj;🦺 Service Dog</a>, though their popular applications may overlap.

Twitter implements the same dog as its <a href="/dog/">🐕 Dog</a>. Samsung and Twitter&rsquo;s guide dogs have green harnesses.

Guide Dog

A sloth, the slow-moving, tree-dwelling mammal. Depicted as a light-brown sloth with a wide, whitish, masked face hanging from a tree branch, facing left or right. Generally shown as a three-toed sloth.

Sloth

An otter, the playful water mammal in the weasel family. Depicted as a light-brown otter on its back, with its forepaws held together and whiskered face to the left, generally with its long tail curled up.

May be used to refer to certain members of the <a href="/pride">LGBTQ</a> community, a la the slang term &quot;otter&quot;.

Apple&rsquo;s otter is in water, holding a stone, as is Microsoft&rsquo;s.

Otter

A skunk, a bushy-tailed mammal that sprays a foul odor when threatened. Depicted in full profile on all fours facing left, with black hair and its distinctive white stripe running from its head down to a curled-up tail.

Google&rsquo;s original skunk design bore a humorously&nbsp;haughty air.

Skunk

A flamingo, a waterbird with pink feathers and long neck and legs. Depicted as a flamingo in full profile facing left, standing on one leg, usually with a long, black beak.

May be used to represent summer fun or as a pink accent color.

Flamingo

A single white or light brown bulb of garlic. Can be used to talk about cooking, eating, or vampire protection.

Garlic

A round yellow onion. Can be used to talk about cooking, eating, or crying. Sometimes used in metaphors about layers. Might also be used in computing contexts in reference to onion routing.

Onion

A round or square Belgian waffle, baked to a golden brown. Most platforms depict this emoji topped with a pad of butter, and some include gooey syrup running down the sides.
