Speech Balloon

Call Me Hand

A&nbsp;<a href="/mobile-phone/" title="📱 Mobile Phone">mobile&nbsp;phone</a> held up to take a selfie (photo of the person holding the phone or camera). Generally represented as a disembodied arm holding a mobile phone.

Selfie

A stylized globe, with blue <a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Meridian_(geography)">meridians</a> (longitudes) and latitude. Depicted with light-blue grid&nbsp;of lines on a white, blue, or empty circle.

May be used as a symbol of the internet or world wide web, global communications, international affairs, connectivity and networks, time zones, coordinates, or the world more generally.

May appear as an icon on Apple devices to change (language) keyboards.

Apple previously displayed&nbsp;this emoji as <a href="/apple/ios-10.0/headphone/" title="🎧 Headphone on Apple iOS 10.0">iconic iPod white earbuds</a>, followed by black&nbsp;<a href="/apple/ios-10.2/headphone/">Beats headphones in 2016</a>, and in 2021 switched <a href="/apple/ios-14.5/headphone/">to display white AirPods Max</a>.

Headphone

A <a href="/mobile-phone/">mobile phone</a> (cell phone) with a <a href="/right-arrow/">rightward&nbsp;arrow</a> pointed at it from the left. Intended to indicate an incoming call or message, but used to represent mobile phones, technology, and communication more generally.

Arrow color varies, but is often blue. Vendors implement the same design as <a href="/mobile-phone/">📱 Mobile Phone</a>.

Mobile Phone with Rightwards Arrow at Left

A classic telephone, as a landline home phone. Most platforms depict a red, push-button phone with the <a href="/telephone-receiver/">handset</a> on the base.&nbsp;Some platforms feature&nbsp;designs with&nbsp;rotary dials.

A <a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fax">fax</a> machine, as scans and transmits documents over a telephone line. Common in the 1980&ndash;90s before the internet. Depicted as a white or black machine with a <a href="/telephone-receiver/">telephone handset</a>, keypad, display screen, and paper in its tray.

Sometimes used in emoji&nbsp;form as&nbsp;an alternative to the words&nbsp;facts, due to the similarity of pronounciation. In a sentence:&nbsp;&quot;all 📠 no 🖨&quot;

Fax Machine

An electric plug, as inserted into socket to power a device. Depicted as a black, two-pronged plug at various angles at the end of a cable. Prongs are silver or gold.

Commonly used for various literal and figurative content concerning electricity and power. May also be used for various slang senses of plug, e.g., a connection or hookup.

Apple and WhatsApp&rsquo;s designs suggest a plug used in North America and Japan while other platforms, including Google and Samsung, suggest one used in Europe and many other parts of the world.

Electric Plug

A laptop personal computer. Depicted as a black or gray device, opened to show a dark or blue screen, keyboard, and touchpad.

Commonly used for various content concerning computer technology, work, and activity.

Previous designs resembled a <a href="/desktop-computer/">desktop computer</a>&nbsp;(e.g., <a href="/apple/ios-9.0/laptop/">iMac</a>) on many platforms, hence its Unicode name of&nbsp;Personal Computer. Apple&rsquo;s design now resembles a MacBook.

Personal Computer

A classic television set, as people watched before streaming on flatscreens.&nbsp;Depicted in various colors and styles with a screen, knobs, and, on many platforms, rabbit-ear antennae.

Commonly used for television broadcasting as well as various content involving screens, from watching <a href="/movie-camera/">movies</a> to playing <a href="/video-game/">video games</a>.

Google&rsquo;s design <a href="/google/android-8.0/television/">previously</a> featured&nbsp;a more modern-looking orange TV.&nbsp;Apple&rsquo;s <a href="/apple/iphone-os-2.2/television/">first design</a> was yellow, while&nbsp;Microsoft&rsquo;s <a href="/microsoft/windows-10/television/">previous design</a> was a flatscreen.

Television

A classic camera, as an <a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Single-lens_reflex_camera">SLR</a>&nbsp;used to take pictures before <a href="/mobile-phone/">camera phones</a>. Generally depicted with a black and silver casing with lens and operating controls.

Commonly used for various content concerning photography as well as an icon for a picture, as before an upload, link, or credit.

Camera

The front page of a newspaper, as people once read the news before the internet. Commonly used for various content concerning news, media, and journalism as well as personal news.

Most platforms depict a nondescript masthead, images, and columns of text. Apple&rsquo;s newspaper is called The Apple Times, featuring a logo based on its&nbsp;<a href="/eagle/">🦅 Eagle</a> and a picture of its <a href="/volcano/">🌋 Volcano</a>. Facebook&rsquo;s is called Daily Feed, with a headline &ldquo;El Capitan&rdquo; and picture of that famous <a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/El_Capitan">rock formation in Yosemite National Park</a>. A newspaper rolled up and bound, as for delivery to a house. Generally positioned at a 45&deg; angle. Commonly used for various content concerning news, media, and journalism&nbsp;as well as personal news.

Rolled-Up Newspaper

A symbol for email. Depicted as the back of an envelope imprinted with a capital letter E (for electronic) or @ (at) sign.&nbsp;Commonly used as an icon before an email address.

The envelope is generally white with the E or @ symbols shown in&nbsp;blue. Apple, Google, and Twitter&#39;s&nbsp;designs feature the letter E, while Microsoft, Facebook, WhatsApp, and Samsung&rsquo;s the @ sign.

Google&#39;s&nbsp;envelope was <a href="/google/android-8.0/e-mail/">previously</a> yellow in color.

E-Mail Symbol

Two links of a silver <a href="/chains/">chain</a>, positioned at a 45&deg; angle. Used as an icon for a <a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hyperlink">hyperlink</a> on computers and the internet. May also be used for metaphorical connections.

Commonly used to represent satellite <a href="/television/">television</a>, <a href="/radio/">radio</a>, and internet, as well as broadcasting, streaming, cellular, and wireless services or technologies. May also represent various concepts of signals and transmission.

Several platforms, including Microsoft and Twitter, feature curved, radiating lines, as if transmitting data.

Satellite Antenna

Mobile Phone Off

Two curly loops, which&nbsp;represent&nbsp;a reel-to-reel tape recorder. Used as a symbol&nbsp;for voicemail on many phones.
